WebGenie

. . . child-proof search engine

One of the biggest fears parents have in letting their children explore the world of cyberspace is that they can go to places we’d rather not have them visit. WebGenie has answered that wish, with the world’s first search engine able to block out adults-only sites.

Aptly named ‘Search hound’, it has created a lot of overseas interest, according to WebGenie’s chief executive officer Dr Siva Prasad. In fact, the program has been sold to the US for $6m in a deal that sees WebGenie retaining the intellectual property.

“We will use the funds to focus on developing innovative and low-cost e-commerce products for small to medium businesses,” Dr Prasad said.

“In fact, we’re hoping to introduce a ‘pay-as-you-sell’ e-commerce package which will make it much easier for small businesses to ride the e-commerce wave.”

In less than 2 years since its formation in 1997, WebGenie Software established a significant Internet presence through the sale and support of its products to thousands of customers in over 50 countries. The growth rate of the company averages over 15% per month. This growth is expected to accelerate even further over the next few years.

WebGenie's clients range from small businesses and private individuals to major professional and government organisations including United Nations, IBM, Compaq, General Electric, Hewlett Packard (Germany and USA), US Government Department of Human Services and Health, KPMG Consulting (Japan), US army, navy and air force, Canadian department of defence, Universities of Massachusetts, Florida, Purdue, East Carolina, Vienna and many more.

With the success of companies like WebGenie it’s little wonder that South Australia’s information technology and telecommunications sector is growing at 28% per year.
