Sept 28, 1998 Winners pitch for Silicon Valley Ten Australian high-tech companies are to travel to Silicon Valley in a fortnight on an industry mission sponsored by Austrade and The Australian Financial Review The companies are to search for business partners and potential investors through a series of meetings, including a session with the chief executive of Cisco systems, and look for opportunities “pitch” to venture capital funds. The ten companies due to depart on October 11, were judged the outstanding nominees in a competition publicised earlier this year in the AFR which drew 100 candidates. The winners gain an all-expenses-paid, one week trade mission to Silicon Valley where their “elevator pitches” - the three minute opportunity to persuade, cajole or convince - will be put to the test. The competition was sponsored by Oracle, Sun Microsystems, OzE-mail, Cisco Systems and the Federal Government’s National Office for the Information Economy. Those sponsors have contributed to the mission’s agenda in California by arranging meetings with technology experts and investment advisers. Cisco systems has arranged a meeting between the 10 companies and its chief executive and founder, Mr. John Chambers. The 10 companies are:
