BANNER*SHOW - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: I get the error message Applet Banners can't start.: exception: java.lang.Null Pointer Exception

A: Most likely the Class files got corrupted during download. Please try emptying your NetScape cache and try again.
top

Q: I need to know what it means when they say "Please put the 5 class files with your html and jpg\gif files".

A: In the Banner*Show self-extracting archive there are five files of the *.class names. These will be expanded in the directory where the program is installed by you. These files must be transferred (in BINARY mode) to your web server.

Q: Can the banner be tested and viewed on the local drive prior to loading it on the server? When I open your "new" banner page and create a "test" page on my local drive the HTML file opens and looks fine, but the banner background is visible for several seconds, then turns grey. Nothing else happens after that. The browser is set up correctly for viewing JAV

A: A. Unfortunately this is an MS IE related problem. IE requires the files to be on the server before running Java. You can use NetScape to view them locally and it works.

Q: Just have one problem, every time I build a page and put in the java code when the page loads I get this message: Applet can't start: class Banners not found. I have put the banners.class and other class files sent with the download into my plugins for Navigator everywhere....still will not load.....I was wondering do these classes have to be uploaded on my server or what??

A: The Class files are included in the archive and will be created in the same directory where you installed the program. These files must be transferred to your web server (in BINARY mode).

Q: I have configured it properly and will run from my machine, but when I FTP the files to the UNIX server and execute from a Netscape it can find the Banner.class. I have also loaded the Banner.class in the same sub directory. Also ran chmod 255 on the file.

A: The Class files are included in the archive and will be created in the same directory where you installed the program. These files must be transferred to your web server (in BINARY mode).

Q: I have been trying to use Banner Show to generate a gif slide show, but no images appear at all. I have checked all paths and verified all gif's. I have tried running this on both IE 3.02 and Netscape Navigator 4.0 with no luck. Both indicate that the script is running but no pictures. The size of the banner I am using is 216 x 174.

A: Have you been testing them locally? For some unknown reason, IE does not show the banners unless the applet and images are downloaded from the server. Try putting them on the server.

Q: Is your Banner Show software only useable for Windows95? Can I use it with Windows3.1?

A: I am afraid all our software is 32 bit and will work only under Win95 or NT. It may work (though not very satisfactorily) under Win32S on Win3.1 Please try it.

Q: I cannot get jpg's and gifs to display in a banner... I believe that I have done all that is necessary but without any success.

A: Have you transferred the images in BINARY mode to the server?

Q: I get a java language error. Set up files OK both text and images and saved in Bannershow directory with class libraries etc. Running locally from hard disk banners run OK with Netscape 3. The following error occurs with Microsoft Explorer 4:- error: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: BannersMsg

A: For some reason IE gives an error (or does nothing) when Banner*Show is run locally. When put up on the server it runs OK.

Q: I'm desperate for multiple zones in the banner. i.e., text in one area doing it's thing and something else in another area, all part of the one image. Does that get into the area of animated gif's ?

A: I think animated GIF is your best bet here. You could also try two Banner*Show frames side by side, with images in one and text in the other.

Q: I'd like to use hex triplets to set the background. When I tried #4a766e (dark teal) I just got light grey. I'd like the banners to blend into the background without a border and my regular background is that hex number. Can I get around that.

A: Normally the BS frame does not have a border. Hence using the same color as your BG should blend it. The best solution is to convert your hex values to decimal (e.g. 4a766e = 74 102 110) and type that into the Red, Green, Blue boxes in the colour box that comes up when you click bgColor within Banner*Show.

Q: Do I only need to upload the class files one? I'm guessing, but am I right in that once the class files are on my server in the same directory as the html page (s), I don't need to upload them for other banners **unless** the pages containing those other banners are in a different directory ?

A: That is correct. But please make sure that the class files are uploaded in BINARY mode.

Q: How will it work with about 100 banner in it???

A: 100 banners may be a bit too many, but will work. Please give it a go, as we haven't tested that many. Perhaps a good idea is to split them into 2 or 3 lots and display on the same page.
top

Q: Will it load them all then start or load the one after the other ???

A: It loads the banners as required only. i.e. no delay in downloading all before starting the cycle.
top

Q: Will it load them into the browser cache while running ??

A: Yes, once downloaded it will be in the cache.
top

Q: I have created a banner with 5 entries however I can not get it to repeat.

A: The default action should be to repeat. Are you testing the file locally? If so, transferring them to your web server and testing from there will help.
top

Q: Where do I put the class files and the other WebGenie files on my server ? Do I put it in the same directory with my html and htm files?

A: That is correct. You must ensure that the class files (*.class) and images (*.gif, *.jpg) are transferred in BINARY mode.

Q: I can't get Banner*Show to make a banner. I just purchased it and I have had trouble getting it to work properly, I get kicked out of it most of the time and it doesn't create my banner. I've followed all the help files and templates included in the software package. I would appreciate it if you could send me a sample banner or advise me of how to correct my mistakes, if it is my fault.

A: Banner*Show is NOT a banner creator but, as its name suggests, a utility to display banners that have been created by other software. This program writes the code to display the banners in a slideshow-like fashion.

Q: The demo only works with the text of "Banner" running across in black text with grey background and can not be modified. I am using Netscape 3.1 and I downloaded twice to see any improvement but the same result. Any suggestions ?

A: Looks like the picture file is corrupted and hence Java cannot display it. Please try uploading again. You will also have to empty the cache before trying again.

Q: I've noticed while working with the program that given a combination of gif and jpg banners the jpg's will not display. I haven't tried using just .jpg images alone. Also some of the .gif's I've been using are animated and they do not cycle through during their presentation.

A: The JPGs and animated GIFs seem to have problem with the Java applet that rotates them. We recommend converting all to GIF (e.g. use LviewPro) before use. Some animations will work but most timings will interfere with Java's timings.
top

Q: I am installing Banner rotation program and tells me I am missing a file. Could tell me where I could get this file please. PVPLUSS32.dll

A: Please download the full archive of Banner*Show and re-install. It will have all files.
top

Q: On a Win 95 version of Navigator 4, I get a "blank" banner after it runs through the two that are coded in to run.

A: It could either be that a blank line was in the 'link URLs' field or a banner is corrupt.
top

Q: Is there a way to adjust the default time that each banner is visible before the transition? I've tried changing the variables "cpf" and "repeat", but nothing consistently works.

A: You can set this param and others by double clicking the line of any particular banner in the 'Link URLs' module.
top

Q: My computer I cannot find to run it. I have tried to download Banner*Show Full Archive 6 times. Every time it says it loaded it, What can I do?

A: You have to install the program after downloading. Please locate the downloaded file, bs32.exe, and double click it.
top

Q: Where are my files? Before saving the program it told me to save the 5 java class files in the banner show directory but I can't find any such directory or the 5 class files. Can you help?

A: The Class files will be in the program dir where Banner*Show is installed.

Q: I am trying to figure out HOW to get an image into a banner...if I select an image from my hard drive and click ok....it shows up as either "Chinese" or just the filename of the image in the banner...what am I doing wrong??

A: To specify an image please type in the 'filename' of the image file rather than opening the file itself.
top

Q: I cannot get any image onto the new banner I create. I type the text (that comes up). I type the URL (that works). Then it gets confusing as to how one can link a *jpg image to the banner. I open the jpg file, enter and save, and the binary code travels across the banner in my browser!

A: Please review the sample file included with the archive. The image files are not read in as such, but instead their filenames are given in the box.
top

Q: The banner always start at number 1. I downloaded your java classes and have been using the banner display as a test to see if I like it, but I have noticed that when I come back to the page that has my banner, it starts from banner # 1. I am using the Java option (not Java Script) so this should not be happening.

A: If you re-load or refresh the page the banner will start from the beginning. But if using the "back " button of the browser the continuity is not lost.
top

Q: The banner show software doesn't give any result with Netscape Communicator. It works OK with Netscape 3.0 and Explorer. (I'm working with Java and Javascript).

A: Both the Java and JS version should work with NetScape Communicator. We have tested up to v4.04. Please ensure that the Java/JS option is turned ON (edit|preferences|advanced)
